About

CHRISTINE MOTT FOR CORONADO CITY COUNCIL 2024

I am a Wall Street trained attorney and business advisor with a background in corporate governance, legislative affairs and a long-time advocate for people, animals and the environment.

You may know me as one of the community leaders that prevailed on a legal challenge to save a Torrey Pine and four other mature pine trees by the lawn bowling court that were improperly slated for removal by the City last Fall. I’m someone who is not afraid to do what's right, even when it’s hard.  I believe it shouldn’t take a lawsuit for the City to do the right thing.

As a Mom of pre-school and elementary-aged children, I want to be a voice for families so Coronado continues to be a place we all want to call home. As a community leader I will support and protect our unique costal community so that it continues to be a special space for generations to come.  My overarching goal is to enhance the quality of life for the residents of Coronado and maintain the beauty and magic of this special community. I believe that “What’s good for the residents of Coronado is good for the city of Coronado.”

With a background in law, business and public policy I’m ready to serve so that proactive, holistic decisions are made to honor and uphold what the past generations of Coronado families have built while planning for the future.  I want to provide dedicated representation for children and families and reframe our approach to be mindful of the impact on our children and future generations of this community. In particular I want to see increased support for community initiatives to benefit our schools, youth and families.

My priorities include:

  • Strengthening environmental protections and initiatives to protect the health of our coastal community.  The cross-border sewage crisis is an existential threat that requires in an all-hands-on-deck approach, including joining forces with our local hotels and other commercial real estate and business stakeholders, and increased advocacy efforts with state and federal representatives as well as the NAVY.  Environmental protections are critical to preserving the beauty and allure of our special coastal community and we need to act now to prevent future environmental harms. I support transitioning the City to solar energy, creating a City sustainability program, and initiatives to address plastic waste, pesticides and other pollutants, as well as increased protections for trees and wildlife.

  • Public safety initiatives. I will advocate for local regulations for e-bikes (including specific training and licensing requirement, speed limits and other safety measures and insurance requirements). As heartbreaking accidents throughout the state and country have shown, common-sense regulations are critical. Let’s not wait until tragedy strikes here. I also support additional pedestrian safety measures (and ensuring better enforcement) to make the community safer including more crosswalks and reduced speed limits.

  • Focused attention on community infrastructure and crisis-readiness. As recent storms and flooding have demonstrated, the City must proactively address our infrastructure, particularly our storm water systems, to ensure we are prepared for the new normal with climate change.  Band-aid remedies aren’t good enough. We need to look holistically at problems and implement innovative and forward-thinking solutions that will help us not just today, but in the future.

  • Support for our schools, youth and families. While Coronado public schools are governed by the school board, the City has an important role in setting policy and initiatives that support our schools.  With our schools dealing with serious funding issues and staffing shortages, I want to see increased support by our City for community initiatives to directly benefit our schools and youth.

  • Accountability and accessibility of government; Planning and fiscal responsibility.  First and foremost, City council members are public servants that should be a sounding board for the community to listen and act in its best interests. I want to see our local government be more accessible and receptive to residents’ comments and concerns and to act more proactively.  I believe the City must better plan, vet and prioritize large projects and expenditures so that we have community consensus and can make thoughtful and definitive decisions.  As a business leader I understand the importance of managing the City in a fiscally responsible way, including seeking out innovative ways to save money and spend wisely in a way that benefits the residents of our community, not outside interests. In particular I want to see increased support for community initiatives to benefit our schools, youth and community organizations.

Thank you for your support!
